un-boring-ify your bios

Here’s a rapid-fire “let’s make your website (or sales page) convert better” tip for you on this fine Thursday morning.

It’s about your bio.

You see, most bios do a perfectly *acceptable* job of explaining what someone does. And hey, they might even cover how they do it.

But they still remain painfully generic with something like: “I’m a [title] who helps [audience] achieve [outcome].”

Which sounds okay (ish)!

Until you realize it also sounds like it could have been written by ~literally anyone else~ in your industry after you swap out the name.

The fix? Getting specific in a way that only you can.

That means weaving in:

  • The personal experience that led you here (i.e., not just your credentials, but the unique story behind them)
  • The unexpected background, pivot, or path that makes your approach different
  • The specific results, numbers, or accolades that could only belong to you

In case you’re curious about what this actually looks like, I put together two real client bio examples – one for a college admissions strategist, one for a relationship coach – with notes on exactly what makes each one impossible to copy-paste onto someone else’s page.

And yes – this applies to the bios on your website, sales page, LinkedIn (and just your copy at large)!

Which brings me to: if you’d like a second set of eyes on your own bio – or really any piece of copy you’re not quite sure about – I have 2 tickets left (just 9 bucks each!) to Monday’s Quick Copy Clinic.

Bring your homepage, a sales page, a launch email, or just about any other piece of copy…

And I’ll give you some practical, personalized feedback on exactly what’s missing and how to fix it.

(And no, you don’t actually have to be there live to get your copy reviewed ;-)

My 10-year business-iversary was this July, and I’m marking the occasion with a classic “10 lessons from 10 years in business.” Part 2 incoming below. Catch part 1 (lessons 1-5) here ICYMI! 6) Perfectionism will be the (second) death of you. [Wondering what the first is? I was being serious when I said to check out part 1 if you missed it. Link here ;-)] Hi, I’m Nicole Elliott, and chronic overthinking and/or agonizing may as well be my middle name. (Yes, I totally overthunk – not a word, I’m...

10 years ago this month, I found myself back in the U.S., fresh off a difficult year of teaching English in South Korea (plus another 3 months of backpacking in Asia with my newish-at-the-time husband), sitting down in my still-bare living room googling “how to make a living writing online.” Amazingly, I’ve managed to make an entire career out of that single Google Search… and am still here, much to my own surprise, a decade later. Here’s what I’ve learned since then. [Part 1 of 2!] 1)...

A few weeks ago, I was at Kit's Craft + Commerce conference and ended up seated next to the delightful Liz Wilcox at dinner. In case you don’t know Liz: she’s the Fresh Princess of Email, she’s built a multiple-six-figure business from a $9/month membership (goals fr), and she was on Survivor (yes, really!). At some point during dinner, she turned to me and said she was, I quote, “sick of people kissing up to her.” And that if I wanted the visibility, I could do a teardown of her famous...
