Oh hey - look who made it to day 5 of my Beyond the Em Dash: The AI Tells Sabotaging Your Copy series. Three cheers for you, Reader! đ Letâs close this one out with the sneakiest of the bunch, because this one can be wayyyy hard to catch in your own copy. (No matter how many times you reread it.) Tell #5: an overreliance on outdated + overused copy clichĂŠs and patterns. Not to get on my copy high horse (though letâs be fr, thatâs literally what Iâve been doing all week), but AI doesnât know whatâs actively converting right now for your industry, for your specific audience, for your specific category of offer. After all, that stuff changes so fast that, despite what all the internet gurus will tell you about this new-fangled MUST TRY NOW OR ELSE PERISH copy technique/tip/whatever⌠This just isnât something thatâs neatly documented online for an AI model to pick up on. So instead, AI defaults to the same stale, overused clichĂŠs & patterns itâs seen most often, regardless of whether theyâre still âworkingâ or whether they actually sell. (Which just means more people leaning on the same handful of copy moves, which makes it even harder to stand out, which pushes even more people toward AI to try to âfixâ it. âTis a vicious circle) Now, whatâs tricky about this is that it isnât just an AI problem. Itâs a non-specialist problem. Because most likely, youâre not spending your days steeped in copy. Constantly reading it, reviewing it, watching what converts or what flops... Seeing whatâs changed, what buyers are sick of seeing, what makes them scroll right past without a second thought â even when the copy itself sounds fine... Instead, youâre spending your time doing whatever it is Reader does best. (Hit reply and tell me what that is, if you feel so inclined!) So hereâs the honest, slightly uncomfortable truth behind this whole series: you can read all five of these AI copy tells, nod along at every single one, and still not be able to catch them in your own copy. For one simple reason: youâre a liiiiittle too close to your own copy, and what you want it to say. And yeah, you also havenât spent the last decade studying and actively testing what makes copy sell. Nor reviewed hundreds of pages across dozens of industries, watching in real time whatâs currently converting VS whatâs merely popular. But hey, nobody expects you to! Thatâs not your job. Though it is â oh so conveniently â very much mine. (I was not-so-subtly hinting at myself above with that âhavenât spent the last decadeâ bit, just in case that wasnât obvious đ) To be clear: this isnât a knock on you. Itâs just the nature of being inside your own business. Which is exactly why a second, outside set of eyes catches things you never could on your own. More on that very soon. But for now⌠enjoy the weekend, folks! ~Nicole P.S. Missed the others in this week's 5-day Beyond the Em Dash series? Give âem a read (each one is short!) below: â[Day 1 of 5] Everyone sounds the same đ (and we hate that for us) â[Day 2 of 5] âOooo thatâs a sexy sentence!â â[Day 3 of 5] Everything but the kitchen sink â[Day 4 of 5] Some assembly required đ ď¸

The Quarterly Copy Pass is closing in... Alright, folks. The Quarterly Copy Pass closes tomorrow. If you opened this email up, my guess is that youâre still on the fence. And totally fair! (Iâm a chronic overthinker myself, so I respect the process.) So my one job in this email is to help you make the right call, whichever way that goes. You know the âthis is perfect for you ifâŚâ email that shows up at this point in every launch? Weâre going to do it a little differently here. Because I donât...
The Quarterly Copy Pass is closing in... Reader, I want to introduce you to my client, Susan. Susan is a graduate of Harvard. Harvard Law School. *And* a Rhodes Scholar (with a degree from Oxford â wowza!). Today, sheâs a college admissions strategist who helps high school students get into the most selective universities in the world. Her studentsâ acceptance rates at those schools â including big hitters like MIT and the Ivies â are about 10x (!!) the national average. And get this: before...
Oh hey Reader. A little birdie (AKA my tagging system in Kit) told me that you *havenât* grabbed a Quarterly Copy Pass yet. Since itâs closing in 2 days (or when passes sell out, and about half are already gone), I figured Iâd pop into your inbox with the questions my passholders asked most before they took the plunge. Because hey, I want YOU to feel as good about your decision to join as Iâll be to have you in. And if youâve been thinking about it, chances are at least one or two of these...
